Texas Drivers License Practice Test

Test your knowledge of Texas traffic laws before you sit the DPS knowledge exam. This free Texas drivers license practice test uses handbook-style multiple-choice questions. When you finish you will see your score, every question, your answer, and the correct answer.

This set has 36 questions. We treat 26 correct as a pass so you clear the official 70% bar with a little room. The exam DPS gives in the office is 30 questions. Questions follow the Texas Driver Handbook (DL-7). They are practice items, not an official DPS form.

What the Texas DPS Written Test Covers

The knowledge exam checks two things: can you read highway signs,
and do you know Texas traffic law. Expect items on:

  • Warning, regulatory, and work-zone signs
  • Right-of-way at intersections, four-way stops, and with pedestrians
  • Speed limits, following distance, and signaling
  • Passing, lane use, and school zones
  • Alcohol, implied consent, and occupant protection
  • Emergency vehicles and the Move Over Law

Every official question is drawn from the Texas Driver Handbook. Download the current DL-7 from DPS and use these practice tests to find the chapters you still miss.

If you are 18–24 and still need a first Texas license, Texas requires a TDLR-approved adult driver education course. Ours is course #C2636 from Virtual Drive of Texas. Adults 25+ can take this course to skip taking the DPS written exam at the DPS office.  The ADE-1317 certificate from our course certifies that you have passed the DPS written exam in our Adult #C2636 course and will not have to take it again at the DPS office.

Practice Test FAQ

How many questions are on the Texas DPS written test?

The Texas Driver Handbook sets the passing score at 70 percent. The knowledge exam DPS currently administers for a Class C learner license or first license is 30 multiple-choice questions. You need 21 correct answers to pass. Offices draw from a larger pool, so the 30 items change from one sitting to the next. All of them come from the handbook.

How many questions are on the Texas permit test?

The permit exam and the first-license knowledge exam are the same test: 30 questions, 70 percent to pass. Teens usually take it after the first six hours of driver education, when they apply for a learner license. Adults take it in an approved adult course or at a DPS office if they still need it.

What score do I need to pass?

70 percent. On the official 30-question exam that is 21 correct. This practice test uses 36 questions and marks a pass at 26 correct so you practice above the official line.

Are these the real DPS questions?

No. They are practice questions written from the Texas Driver Handbook in the same style as the official exam. DPS keeps several versions of the real test. Use the review screen to learn the rule, not to memorize a letter.

Can I take the Texas permit test or written test online?

Adults in a TDLR-approved adult driver education course can take the official knowledge test inside the course. Our 6-hour adult course (TDLR #C2636) includes that exam, up to three attempts, and the ADE-1317 certificate DPS accepts in place of the office written test. Teens complete the knowledge test through their parent-taught or in-car program, then go to DPS for the learner license. There is no standalone “skip DPS” online test without an approved course.

Does the adult course include the DPS written test?

Yes. The final exam in our adult course is the knowledge test. 90.4% of our students pass on the first try. If you miss it, review the modules and try again (three attempts). Print the ADE-1317 from your account when you pass.

How does an 18-year-old get a Texas drivers license?

Enroll in a TDLR-approved 6-hour adult course, finish the modules, pass the knowledge test in the course, print the ADE-1317, complete ITAD before the road test, then visit DPS for vision and the driving test. You can request a learner license at DPS if you still need supervised practice. Full steps and price ($38) are on the adult course page.

What do I need for a Texas learner permit?

Age 15 or older, the required driver education progress (teens: first six hours plus the knowledge test; adults 18–24: adult course and ADE-1317), proof of identity and residency, and a passing vision screening at DPS. A licensed adult must ride with a permit holder.

Do I need a DPS appointment?

Driving (road) tests are scheduled through the DPS public scheduler. Counter visits for a permit or first license depend on the office — some still take walk-ins, many now expect an appointment. Check public.txdpsscheduler.com and your local office listing before you go. Mid-morning and late afternoon are the busiest windows.

How old do you have to be to drive in Texas?

You may apply for a learner license at 15 with the required driver education. A provisional license is available at 16 after the full teen course, six months on a learner license, vision, and the driving test. Adults 18–24 who did not finish a Texas teen course must complete adult driver education first.

Should I study road signs separately?

Yes. Signs are an easy place to drop points. Take the road signs practice test after this quiz, then reread the signs chapter in DL-7.
